BADLANDS Now when it comes to badlands, the first question that comes to minds is this. “What are badlands?” And the second question, which naturally follows, is this. “Where are they found?” Exactly “what” badlands are, has yet to be determined. But when it comes to “where,” where the badlands are, we pretty much have that covered. It starts with the moon then ventures out from there. Venus, Mercury and Mars, Neptune and Saturn, Uranus, mighty Jupiter and little old Pluto. The centre of Earth, where the land flows, like red hot lava, and nothing grows. Crusty eyelids for the minuscule creatures that live there like sewer rats. “Badlands” need not be land in the conventional manner, but merely a crack in the surface. “Badlands” can land damn near anywhere, and be damn near anything they choose to be. A place, a time, an event. A shadow. Black air, on a wet black street, under a lamppost. Badlands are everywhere. A broken dream. Psychotherapy. A woman in despair. The bottom of a pit.
