BALI BOMBING HEROES RECOGNISED ON PERTH BUSINESS & GOVERNMENT WHITE PAGES® COVER Professor Fiona Wood OAM and Peter Hughes BM, two Perth residents brought together by the Bali bombings 11 years ago, have been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Perth Business and Government White Pages® Book. Prof Wood and Peter have been selected for the cover under the 2013/14 theme Keeping Our Communities Healthy, which recognises the selfless Australians who go above and beyond to improve the quality of life for locals in their area. Brought together in the most trying of circumstances, Prof Wood and Peter are building a brighter future for burns survivors across Australia. An innovative plastic surgeon, Prof Wood led the team treating burns victims injured in the 2002 Bali bombings, including Peter. She became known for her revolutionary spray-on skin technology, which helps heal burns and reduce long-term scarring. The pair have remained close since Peter’s treatment and subsequent rehabilitation, helping other burns survivors in their recovery. Having spent decades developing innovative technologies to improve care, Prof Wood oversees the Fiona Wood Foundation, raising money to fund research into skin repair and reconstruction. She is also patron of the Peter Hughes Burn Foundation, which Peter founded in 2009 after spending five years volunteering with the Burns Foundation of Australia. As a part of the Foundation, Peter aims to support burns survivors and mentor them through recovery. He shares his story with other burns survivors at retreats held by the organisation, along with other inspirational events throughout Australia. With Prof Wood leading a dedicated team committed to improving treatment, and Peter determined to provide the best support for burns survivors, these two are changing the future for burns survivors. “To be selected for the cover alongside Peter is an honour. Who knew that 11 years after we met in such traumatic circumstances, we would be the faces on the Perth phone book?” Prof Wood said. “I am very proud to stand next to Fiona on this cover – she is an inspiration to many and changing the future for burns survivors. I feel very lucky to be able to help other burns survivors come to terms with their situation. I thank Sensis for this opportunity to raise awareness about the Foundation,” Peter said. Each year, Sensis®, the publisher of the White Pages®, recognises the efforts of local people in their communities by celebrating their achievements on the cover of its books. White Pages® Product Manager Sarah Simpson said this year’s theme, Keeping Our Communities Healthy, celebrates people committed to improving the health of Australian communities. “Health is an issue that affects us all and at the centre of good health are the selfless men and women who devote their time to improving others’ quality of life,” she said. “We are delighted to recognise Professor Wood and Peter’s efforts keeping their community healthy. They are two people who have made a positive impact on health and wellbeing across Australia.” The Perth Business and Government White Pages® Book will commence distribution on 28 September.
