BAM’s Sunshine Noir film series (11/26 – 12/9) features some of the usual suspects—Chinatown, Heat, True Romance—along with some true rarities, including Robert Altman’s druggy take on Raymond Chandler’s The Long Goodbye; James Bridges’ Mike’s Murder, with Debra Winger as a young banker who falls into the orbit of an L.A. hustler; Jim McBride’s remake of Godard’s Breathless, with Richard Gere in the Belmondo role; Jacques Deray’s The Outside Man, featuring Jean-Louis Trintignant as a French hit man in L.A.; Robert Mulligan’s little seen and downbeat The Nickel Ride, with Jason Miller, sometime actor and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, This Championship Season, as an L.A. crime boss; and Ulu Grosbard’s Straight Time, with Dustin Hoffman searing portrayal of a career criminal trying (and failing) to go straight.
