BANDERIVETS This word is often has a pejorative and offencive meaning and reffers to the citizens of Western Ukraine. Historically speaking, since the SWW till our times, the South and East of Ukraine prefere to use it in order to offend the West of Ukraine. You may come across such word while watching news or directly being in the center of our revolutionary days. So,what does it mean? The roots of this word go into the history of the Second World War and related to the name of the leader of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army Stepan Bandera, so the word is derived from his surname (Bandera -Bander-ivets) Bandera, among other things, has been accused by many of cooperating with the Nazis during the Second World War. For instance, in 1941 Bandera urged the Ukrainian people to help Nazis destroy Moscow and the Bolsheviks. He was the leader of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) that was created in 1942 by a faction of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). The UPA fought mostly against the Armia Krajowa of Poland and the Red Army in Western Ukraine. However, in Western Ukraine, many people see Bandera as a hero. Streets in several cities have been named after him and a monument has also been recently been erected in his name in Lvov. But in eastern, southern parts of the country Bandera is seen as a traitor and Nazi sympathizer. Some people feel honour to be called banderivets and some will never recognize him and his twofold actions! P.S. The flags of his army are still supporting the revolutionary spirit of the Ukrainians!
