BANGLADESH DIARIES IS BACK ON !! Bangladesh Diaries Foreword: My name is Salam Jones. Well that’s what you the reader may know me as. My real name is Abdul Salam. A name given to me by my Bangladeshi Muslim parents. Ide like to think that if they were both here, they would understand that the name Jones was adopted merely as a ‘writers name’ and be happy with the things I am doing under that name. I was born in Sylhet, Bangladesh just before the war of independence in November 1970. Besides a few vivid memories of running around half naked in the village where I grew up until the age of 5, I don’t really have many recollections of my homeland, the country of my birth. After 37 years of living and growing in the United Kingdom, as well as having spent 7 of those years living in the city of Amsterdam, the capital of The Netherlands, it would be fair to say that I am very different to the peers and family members that I left behind in the villages of Sylhet District so many years before. Not having many opportunities to visit Bangladesh before, I worked hard, saved a little and decided to go and explore this ‘undiscovered land’ by myself, for myself. After all, the one rule I try to live by is, not to depart this life with any regrets about the things I didn’t do. Thank you for purchasing Bangladesh Diaries. Your support means more than you could possibly know. The profits from this book, after all production, processing, and publication costs are being donated towards two different charities. The first being the LEEDO street children’s shelter in Dhaka which does some fantastic work, and the other being the Beau Selector Orphanage Fund, which aims to build one of the largest self-sustaining orphanages in Sylhet. This book is about my journeys. The experiences I had, not only as a Bangladeshi, but also as a westerner. These are my interpretations of a country that I feel strongly connected to, and this is my story. I pray that you enjoy, reading about the journey, and the beautiful pictures, as much as I enjoyed taking them. Salam Jones.
