BARR. SOLOMON DALUNG: THE ROARING THUNDER OF OTAROK - By Maiwada Dammallam Cool and cloudy, today seem like any ordinary day of a rainy season but, its not. Today is extra special because it usher in a new year in the life of an exceptional Nigerian, Barr. Solomon Dalung a.k.a. Igbarman Otarok (the thunder of Tarok. Im rolling out the drums to celebrate this honest gentleman. Like him or not, one thing you cannot deny Barr. Dalung is his ability to create hope where hopelessness is the norm. He is a bridge builder; a meticulous one who could build a floating bridge on a raging sea to provide alternative route to a hopelessly trapped victims of a sinking ship. Dalungs respectability knows no boundary. It was on a day like this last year that he was awakened by a phone call from no less a person than Gen. Buhari - the unbreakable peoples General. The purpose of the call, to wish Dalung Happy Birthday, as well assure him of the unconditional support of the peoples General in Dalungs untiring effort to redirect Nigeria back to the path of recovery and glory as a nation - talk about birds of the same feather. Simple as it seemed, that phone call couldnt have been accidental. Dalung must have earned the respect of, probably the most respected person in Nigerias history - positive attract, if you like. While its not everybody that receive such historical phone calls, its also not everybody that could live his act like Barr. Dalung. This is a man with a name that could open the vaults of public treasury to live the life of Jeeps and exotic mansions yet, is contented with a middle class life within his legitimate means. Very few Nigerian could resist the daily temptations of easy life being thrown his way as a bait to take him off the path of godliness and patriotism for which he is globally being celebrated. If any man could be said to have proved his worth, that man is Barr. Dalung. He is so good at being good that being good is like a second skin to him. It is my honest belief that had Dalung succumbed to the temptation of the heart, today we will be celebrating him as another money bag rubbing shoulders with our cheap 10 for 10 kobo pot-bellied demigods with nothing to show but bogus titles and undeserved honors. Whereas many people sacrifice their names and souls in search of an angle to place their fangs on the national cake, Barr. Dalung was known to have rejected even what in Nigerias context could be considered legit for his utter disbelief in the process that made such things legit. Calculating his worth in present day Nigeria is so easy going by the role he is playing in keeping any government on its toes trying to see right things been done the right way. Its not for nothing that not only he is a visible member of forums like Northern Elders Forum (NEF), he always add value to such forums. As they say, a child with a washed hand could always dine with the kings. No doubt, Barr. Dalung have washed his hands cleaner than most of the kings he dine with it. This human phenomenon is worthy of celebration any day. I congratulate Barr. Solomon Dalung for the enormous lesson his life may be to the next generation of Nigerians. I also congratulate this fearless social critic, advocate of good governance, uncompromising human right activist and sincere Nigerian as he mark yet another year in his productive and tortuous journey to a better Nigeria. Happy Birthday sir.
