Barwon-Darling Water Cup’s (BDRL) senior representative side will be looking to make it two-from-two when it meets Group 4 second division in next Saturday’s (July 13) second annual representative challenge at Cook Oval, Wee Waa. The BDRL beat Group 4 second division 72-36 at No 1 Oval, Walgett, last July in the first-ever challenge between the two competitions. After leading the BDRL to a 16-14 loss against Woodbridge Cup and 36-28 win against Centennial Coal Cup at the Western Region Quad Series in Dubbo back in May, Walgett back-rower Charley Kennedy has retained the captain-coach role for the BDRL. Kennedy has again put in a lot of hard work into assembling the side before selecting his 20-man squad in consultation with manager Des Hall. The BDRL has also ordered new representative jerseys, shorts and socks for players for this fixture which have been made possible by some generous sponsorship from both Barwon-Darling Water and Outback Radio 2WEB. The BDRL side will be splashed out in white, grey and black – retaining the traditions of the old black and white colours of Group 15. Kennedy said he can’t wait for this representative fixture after also lining up in last year’s victorious side. “The boys are keen … we enjoyed the match last year and now we have the challenge of travelling further to play this match,” Kennedy said. “It should be a great game.” Walgett fullback Louis Murphy has scored eight tries this season and is a former NSW Country Seconds representative from his time with Coonamble in the Castlereagh League. Murphy has held off multiple contenders for the one jersey, including team-mate Kevin Murray who has also bagged eight four-pointers in 2013. Murray has been named in the centres. Former Inverell Hawks Group 19 first grader Todd Prince has been strong for Bourke recently at five-eighth, but will line up on a wing with the BDRL as the 2013 senior competition’s leading point-scorer Willie Wright (six tries, 32 goals, 86 points) retains the BDRL six shirt. Walgett play-maker Wright scored 36 points in the BDRL’s win against Group 4 second division last year. Thomas Sullivan has been impressive up-front for Walgett and lines up alongside Newtown’s key bookend Nathan Boney, but Dragons lock Richard Dennis has strong claims as the competition’s best player this season and will wear the 13 shirt for the BDRL. The Enngonia Outlaws have quality utility Les Boney named at halfback while impressive youngster Hogan Shillingsworth is also in the 20-man squad. This representative fixture is the main game on a big day of football at Wee Waa and will start at 2.30pm. A golden oldies league match starts the day in Wee Waa at 10.30am before Group 4 first division arch-rivals Narrabri and Wee Waa meet in reserve grade and first grade before this representative fixture.
