BATAVIA Havenwood Congregate Apartments evacuated after a frozen sprinkler system caused pipes to burst The City of Batavia Fire Department has been on scene at Havenwood Congregate Apartments on Richmond avenue since 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. According to Lt. Jeff Whitcombe with the City of Batavia Fire Department, crews were called to the senior housing facility for a sprinkler system activation. Whitcombe says the sprinkler system froze up due to the cold temperatures and pipes burst causing water damage in one wing of the first floor. Water from the pipe burst brought down a ceiling and caused flooding in a hallway area and several apartments. The 32 apartment complex had to be evacuated after the incident. 29 residents at the facility were transported to the Comfort Inn on Federal Drive for the night. The Batavia Bus Service provided the transportation because their buses were able to transport wheelchair bound residents. Whitcombe says it took several hours to complete the evacuation.
