BATHOEN TRUST, BOTSWANA SOCIETY SIGN AGREEMENT The Kanye -based Bathoen II Trust and Botswana Society (BS) this week signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to protect the rich historical heritage in the Southern District. The BS chairperson, Professor Otlhogile Bojosi said the MoU would enable the two organisations to formally work together to protect the heritage. Professor Bojosi said the Botswana Society was charged with remembering, recalling and retelling the Botswana story to Batswana and the world, therefore the marriage would also make Ga-Ngwaketse known to Batswana and the rest of the world. To this end, he said they would assist the trust to identify, record and document all the historical sites around Ga-Ngwaketse with the view to protecting them for posterity. “We also have a website: botswanabeckons, where we will document this information and make it easily accessible to the world, especially tourists,” he said. He said the district has a rich cultural heritage which could be sold to the world, thus believed the partnership would make the trust more visible. Bathoen Trust board member, Mr Geoffrey Serebolo said they would identify young people from different villages around the district who would train as cultural tour guides. “The good thing is, these young people can also open up their own tourism related businesses and benefit. We will also develop tour routes for easy access,” he said. Mr Serebolo also affirmed that the partnership would afford his organisation more visibility. “We are excited about this opportunity, we believe since their mission is to make Botswana known to us and the world, so will be Ga-Ngwaketse,” he said. However, Mr Serebolo noted that Bathoen Trust would not run the envisioned tourism facilities around the district. “The idea is to preserve our heritage, so we will mobilise the communities around the district to operate on their own and where they can, donate to the trust,” he said. Meanwhile, Mr Pontius Mokgosana has expressed optimism that the signing of MoU was a sign of good things to come. He vowed that Bathoen Trust would ensure the marriage survived and encouraged the youth of Ga-Ngwaketse to come forward with fresh ideas and lend their expertise to the board. (BOPA)
