BAYELSA STATE GOVERNMENT RESTATES COMMITMENT TO THE FIGHT AGAINST EBOLA DISEASE The Bayelsa State Commissioner For Health,Dr Ayibatonye Owei has said the State government is fully committed to the fight against the dreaded Ebola virus disease(EVD). The Commissioner stated this on Tuesday,August 9,2014 while speaking at a health sensitization/ Training the trainers workshop on Ebola virus disease organised by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Centre for Disease Control( CDC) in conjunction with the Bayelsa State Ministry of Health at the Conference Hall of the Ministry. According to the Commissioner,who was represented at the occasion by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Dr Bribina Samayin,the Ebola virus diseases ,is a national emergency and the State government is taking proactive measures to contain the disease,should it find its way into the State. He said the workshop is training of trainers on the Ebola virus disease,adding that those trained at the workshop would in turn train other health personnel at the local government areas. Dr Owei expressed appreciation to the Governor of the State Hon. Seriake Dickson for his support and commitment to the fight against Ebola virus disease. On the objective and expected outcome of the workshop,the Director of Public Health in the Ministry,Dr Wakiente Omubo said following the recent concluded emergency Natiobal council on Health (NCH) meeting held in Abuja,the Council decided to train health workers in the States and Federal Capital territory,Abuja in a scheduled plan. He said the workshop is to create awareness and sensitize health workers on the causes ,mode of transmission,prevention and control measures against Ebola virus disease,adding that the workshop is also to enhance the capacity of clinicians and other health workers in case recognition and infection control of the Ebola virus disease. Other objectives ,according to Dr Omubo are to enhance the capacity of laboratory scientists to handle specimen as well as establish mechanism for sharing information and coordinating the creation of awareness among community members on Ebola virus disease,amongst others. Workshop papers on outbreak investigation ,overview/ epidemiology on Ebola virus disease ,contract tracing and surveillance as well as infection prevention and control in healthcare setting,were presented by resource persons from the Federal Ministry of Health,Abuja.
