BAYVIEW STUDENTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY Bayview College students are regularly provided with the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and at the same time support the local community. Service Learning was introduced 3 years ago, involving a range of community-based activities giving students the ability to better understand how their service assists the community and how it ties in with the pastoral care program taught in the classroom. Hamish Clark, 15 spent time at Loaves and Fishes packing hampers for the needy. “I didn’t realise there were so many people relying on Loaves and Fishes for these hampers.” he said. “It’s nice to know that I have helped make someone’s Christmas a little bit cheerful this year.” he said. Olivia Cottier, 15 and her class mates went to Harbourside Lodge to decorate Christmas trees and play board games. “The residents were not able to help us decorate the Christmas trees but I could see how much they loved having us there.” she said. “Christmas can be a lonely time for the residents if they don’t have family.” “I hope they remember our visit and know that we will be thinking of them.” she added. Packing food hampers for Loaves and Fishes, outdoor activities with clients from Kyeema Support Services and Christmas activities with older citizens from BUPA and Harbourside Lodge are just some of the activities completed by Bayview College students from Year 7 to Year 9. The Service Learning program runs during the last week of school on Monday - Wednesday afternoons.
