BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter Claira Hermet (27) is a young woman who speaks openly and honestly about the fears and realities of #breastcancer and being a gene carrier. When Claira was 9 years old, her mum died of breast cancer. 3 years ago, she lost her sister to breast cancer. Doctors have told Claira there is an 85% chance she will develop breast cancer, as she has inherited a mutation in her BRCA1 gene. Claira has chosen to have a preventative double mastectomy and is due to have surgery on 15 January 2015. Claira approached Breakthrough before Christmas, telling us that she wanted to help other women by sharing her experience as widely as possible. We are honoured to be able to share Clairas latest video blog here, in which she takes time to answer peoples questions, and in doing so sheds more light on what she is doing and why. She addresses her situation with proactivity, humour and positivity, and we recommend that you watch it.
