BBC World News is showing an informative, heart-rendering report on the horrendous Magdalene Laundries operated by the Catholic Church in Ireland with impunity, and a government cover-up. Thousands of workers began as orphaned young girls, mainly from rural areas, were abused and essentially imprisoned for decades, akin to white slavey. One woman was held for 47 years, died in the laundry and quietly buried nearby. Babies were taken from raped mothers after birth and sold into adoption. The laundries were operated for commercial reasons and profit, and their clients included big capital and government departments and agencies, such as the Dept. of Fisheries and the Dublin airport, despite protests by trade unions and private laundries who could not compete. The nuns have assets of over 1.5 billion euros yet refuse reparations. No one has been prosecuted. bbc/news/magazine-29307705
