BCP PRIMARY RESULTS NSHIMWE, ARONE WIN Botswana Congress Party (BCP) held primary elections in four constituencies in the north of Dibete over the weekend (November 16). Two of the BCP MPs, Messrs Gibson Nshimwe of Chobe and Bagalatia Arone of Okavango won the primary elections. In a hotly contested position of Member of Parliament for Chobe, Mr Nshimwe won by 499 votes against the youthful, Mr Oscar Mapulanga who got 355 votes. After accepting the results, Mr Mapulanga advised voters to put the interests of the party before those of individuals. “If I wanted to protest these results, I would because in some cases proper procedure was not followed, but I won’t,” he said. Mr Nshimwe thanked voters for voting him saying, “I believe the people have chosen BCP and not me.” He expressed hope that people would not fight amongst themselves but instead fight the ruling party. The returning officer, Mr Pholoma Kgetse advised candidates who won to work together with those who lost. He complained about the low turnout of voters. Mr Arone won by 3 850 votes against Mr. Sam Kavindama’s 263. In the Selebi Phikwe West and East constituencies, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse and Mr Kgoberego Nkawana emerged as winners respectfully. The Selebi Phikwe West constituency incumbent MP, Mr. Gibson Saleshando did not contest as he had indicated that at the end of his five year term in 2014 he would not stand for general elections. Mr Keorapetse won the Selebi Phikwe West elections by 598 votes followed by Mr Seji Wale with 385 votes while Mr Nzwaligwa Nzwaligwa and Obakeng Kanthaga came in third and fourth with 262 and 116 votes respectively. In the Selebi Phikwe East constituency, Mr Nkawana came up tops by 710 votes against Mr Kgololego Kabelo who got 375 votes while Mr Benjamin Bagayi came in last with 287 votes. In an interview, Selebi Phikwe primary elections chairperson, Mr Lebogang Phologe said the election went well in the two constituencies. However he noted that the only challenge they experienced was at Sesame South ward in the Selebi Phikwe West constituency where tension erupted when electorates wanted the ballots to be counted at Sesame Ward before being transferred to Makhubu Secondary School which was the central counting point in the constituency.
