BE AWARE - PHONE FRAUDSTERS Windsor Police would like to warn people of a recent fraud involving a con man making contact with a Hawkesbury resident by phone claiming to be employed by a particular computer related company. The con man informed the victim that the company had discovered a virus on his computer. The con man convinced the victim to supply his credit card details over the phone to pay for anti-virus software. The con man then asked the victim for details to allow him remote access to his computer and asked the victim to switch off his computer for 24 hours. The victim later discovered his credit card had been used to the value of thousands of dollars. Police are warning people not to give out personal particulars over the phone, including account/credit card details, passwords, personal information etc. Always verify who you are speaking with. Ask for the details of the person you are speaking with and tell them you are going to make your own inquiries to verify who they are before dealing with them. Government websites have been set up to assist people to be more aware of scams. They include scamwatch.gov.au or staysmartonline.gov.au The New South Wales Police Force website also has an area under the community issues tab with information about fraud and scams.
