BE CRITICALLY POSITIVE Taking criticism in the right spirit helps one march ahead in life. One who knows how to deal with criticism also knows how to deal with life and death. Criticism tests one’s maturity and the ability to improve. The best of friends at times could be your worst enemies because they are blind to your weaknesses. Your enemy gives you an opportunity to show that you can be a good person and magnanimous even under adverse and trying circumstances. Unfortunately, most of us take criticism negatively and hit back in the same coin. That harms us. Criticism comes as a bitter pill. As Winston Churchill said, ”Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.” Hitting back makes you no better than the person trying to run you down. He succeeds the moment you try to duplicate his behavior. None of you is a winner; both are losers because the “negativity” will pull you both down further. It will be like a palace of sand likely to fall with the first blow of the wind. All of us love to be praised; and only a few of us love to be criticised. There is nothing wrong with a “shower of praise” by our well-wishers. What is wrong is that one tends to “get bloated” after a shower of public praise. And therein lies the first step to downfall. Norman Vincent Peale, the author of The Power of Positive Thinking, says, “The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism.” One who tries to avoid criticism is a person who tries to shirk any work of importance. He says nothing and does nothing; and as someone had said, he “becomes nothing”!
