BE KIND ON MEAN GIRLS DAY! Today, it seems, is Mean Girls Day. You know the American high-school chick-flick from 2004? Much-quoted (by Barrack Obama, among others), repeatedly watched by young people of both genders - and often their parents, it should be acknowledged. The film, about an innocent young white girl who has grown up in Africa and been home-educated until she moves to the USA at 16, has become a classic whose popularity endures 10 years later - as demonstrated by the apparent universal excitement about Mean Girls Day (the day of a significant interaction between the films heroine and the Boy of her Dreams). Sounds awful and it kind of is. But its deliberate awfulness, done brilliantly. Mean Girls has a stark relevance to the issues around social acceptance that plague our society. Its a fabulous exaggeration of the stereotypes young people might adopt in order to fit in, or because they dont know how to. It will make you squirm, then think, and hopefully empathise. Its funny, shocking, endearing, outrageous and heartwarming. Part of me feels a little bit shameful about the feeling of affection it engenders in me. My daughters loved it, and yes, I admit, I did too. Still do. There. Hope in the Heart challenges you to BE KIND ON MEAN GIRLS DAY! https://youtube/watch?v=9YUaQGEQ8-Q
