BE ORIGINAL MOSAIC PEOPLE! In the past week, I have seen two very disturbing instances of mosaic copying. Well, theyre all disturbing, actually, but these two put me over the top and thus I rant. In the first, the work was proudly presented here on Facebook AS a copy of the original artists piece. Did the copier have permission? Somehow, I doubt it. In the second, I found a photo in a major online magazine story of another artists work being shown on a client inspiration board for a US company that manufactures mosaics. It had been modified a bit - but you would all recognize the original in a nanosecond. In fact, we would all recognize both works because the styles of the artists are so singular and original. In the past, I have seen obvious copies actually win awards in an international competition. What was most perplexing was that other artists in the show must surely have recognized the copies and yet nothing changed. The show went on. I shook my head in disbelief. I dont care if its a study or if its only going to live in your living room ---Copying is theft - plain and simple - cultural differences and naiveté be damned. As a community, we should neither countenance copying nor support it. I am not talking about pitchforks and firebrands. I am saying that the offenders should be contacted and schooled appropriately. And teachers - you play a special role in this - you have the opportunity to set standards that your students will live by. Bottom line -- You want the medium of mosaic to be taken seriously? Then start taking yourselves seriously. And that, my Friends, will probably win me the Scrooge of the Day Award.
