BEANER RANT: TAPS Last night a good friend surprised me by playing TAPS. We live in the mountains and he placed himself on a hillside at dusk. It had just started to rain. The sound of his bugle and the hush of the day echoed. It was breath taking and moving. I had lost several buddies due to the ravages of war, so its meaning hit home. That morning our Pastors wife beautifully sang Wounded Warrior, at church, so unexpectedly, yesterday was very emotional. There is something singularly beautiful and appropriate in the music of this wonderful call. Its strains are melancholy, yet full of rest and peace. Its echoes linger in the heart long after its tones have ceased to vibrate in the air. It is one of those moments when nothing short of perfection will suffice and in this case, John didnt disappoint. What a exquisite and powerful piece of music. It has a different meaning to everyone that hears it. To some people its the start of trying to heal. To others its closure. Many dont know there are lyrics to this. Here they are: Fading light dims the sight, And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright. From afar drawing nigh -- Falls the night. Day is done, gone the sun, From the lake, from the hills, from the sky; All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. Then good night, peaceful night, Till the light of the dawn shineth bright; God is near, do not fear -- Friend, good night. God bless you, John.
