BEET WESTERN YELLOWS VIRUS UPDATE: The first two photos below are taken in the same spots as our 18th July post (scroll below), and the third is a part of the paddock more severely affected. As you can see, the canola seed which was not treated with Imadaclopryid has recovered somewhat, whereas the virus has spread into the next paddock which was treated and was very healthy early on, and dragged it back significantly. These are some of our worst affected areas, but the virus symptoms are certainly through all of our canola now, with variable rates of impact. Both paddocks in these photos had variable rate of SOA spread (prior to 18th July photos), and the treated (2nd) paddock had 30 - 50kg Urea a couple weeks ago. Certainly, soil type and stress levels have been impacting factors as well, and six frosts in a row (with 2 days of minus 5 deg) have not helped. We would be interested to hear how others are faring, and what expected yield impact will be in our and other areas. Remember in looking at our photos that we are a marginal area and a canola crop of 0.4 - 0.6t / ha is considered average and commercially viable, so dont compare them with the norm of 2t/ha + in other parts of the country (or 5t/ha in the UK!).
