BEFORE A BLUNT I TAKE OUT MY FRONTS The Queensbridge Crew tee from the NY drop is all about NAS. What could be wrong with that? Nothing. I didnt get deep into Nas and Illmatic until I got back from the USA; only 20 years late. Musically, for me, going to America was all about getting into and understanding Hip Hop and why its important; before that I wasnt getting it; only because thats not where I come from in terms of music. I play in a hip hop band; didnt mean I dug or knew the classics or a majority of the stuff I heard. While I was there I let it all soak in. When I got back to Melbourne I got to work and re-lived all the 90s New York nostalgia from the sights and experiences id had through Nas and A Tribe Called Quest in particular. It was a good feeling to finally feel and understand these tunes the way they were supposed to be felt. As I knew, and have now found out, EVERYONE loves Illmatic and I know why, its siiiiick. I researched everything I could, heard all the little imperfections that have stories, I love that shit. It was a bit of a revelation for me so I wanted to do a Nas line as one of these designs. There are hundreds of lines I couldve chosen from, I have loads written down in my notebooks. I came to a conclusion it should be a Queensbridge Crew tee, representing the Queensbridge Houses, the biggest housing commission in North America in the borough of Queens. The song Halftime is the one that first hit me, the way he talks about so much cool 20-year-old-dude-New-York shit and just makes it lean back. One I loved/love is, I wont plant seeds, dont need an extra mouth I cant feed, thats extra phillie change, more cash for damp weed. Thats a sentiment I can dig. Ha ha ha, but really. In the end I chose the first line, before a bunt, I take out my fronts. Without digging too deep, like the previous line, it feels like it sums Nas mindset at the time. This line is in the Supreme red, rectangle box. The design is rounded out by the bridge which is appropriated from this picture I found of the board out the front of the Queensbridge projects. If youve been checking out all the NY designs youll see they all have a star and an NY somewhere. Ill explain it in the next post.
