BEGINS THIS SUNDAY! Director/writer/comedian/producer Woody Allen rose from writer for Sid Caesar to stand-up comedian, playwright, and then, cinema auteur. He began to .direct early comedies, with hints of the Marx Brothers and Bob Hope, and then matured into an auteur of he highest level. In this film series, we will focus on four of Woody Allens early celebrated film comedies. Sleeper (1973)-Sunday, October 19th, 10AM-1PM In this futuristic comedy, a musician/store owner is revived out of cryostasis into a future world to fight an oppressive government. Also stars Diane Keaton. Annie Hall (1977)-Sunday, October 26th, 10AM-1PM Allen’s winner of the Academy Award® for best picture, about Alvy Singer, a comedian who tries to figure out what went wrong in his relationship to Annie (Diane Keaton). Allen’s transition to a more complex comedy structure and treatment. Manhattan (1979)-Sunday, November 9th, 10AM-1PM The life of a divorced television writer, planning on writing a book, dating a teenage girl, is further complicated when he falls in love with his best friends mistress. Also stars Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton and Mariel Hemingway, and backed by an all-Gershwin score. Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)-Sunday, November 16th, 10AM-1PM Tells the connected stories of an extended family over two years that begins and ends with a Thanksgiving dinner. Stars Allen, Mia Farrow, Michael Caine, Max Von Sydow and Barbara Hershey. Fee for each program, which includes light brunch, lecture, film screening, and post film discussion, is $5.00.
