BEHIND THE SCENES TONIGHT ON THE RECORD at 7pm! (CHAOTIC!) An alarm went off in our studio tonight during ON THE RECORD. My stage manager quickly through something over it to muffle it and to hide the flashing light from reflecting on the set and thus you would see at home...seconds later we went to break and then we all had to figure what was going on. We were told the building / bureau was evacuating so we evacuated, too. As it turned out, we were lucky Shep Smith in NYC was standing by and took over the show -- going right to the segment on weather (which was what I was going to do after the break.) We walked down all the flights of steps and stood outside in the snow briefly and then we all got directed into the lobby building. The building people were trying to figure out why the alarm had gone off throughout the entire ten or so story bldg. I ran into a few of my guests - Rick Klein of ABC and AB Stoddard. I told AB that this had happened once before and that we had even had an incident once when Rick Klein was a guest. In that incident with Rick Klein, the building had lost all power and we were in our offices with candles since it was late (when we were on at 10pm.) We had a generator for cameras and lights in the studio but the rest of the building was pitch black and of course the elevators did not work so Rick had to walk up 5 flights. After some time we got the clear sign...went back up...and went back to the set...and Shep turned the show back over to me. It was a bit chaotic and I thought all was ok...but then we had that phoner from Russia about security in Sochi and I dont know about you, but I could not understand a word he said My audio was horrible....but any way, the show ended at 8pm and all I could think was, can someone tell me what we just did for the last hour? Thankfully...tomorrow is a new day...and a new show. Tonight was pretty chaotic.
