BEING A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS) ZONE D CONGRESSAND PRAYER SESSION HELD AT THE OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY, AGO-IWOYE TODAY THURSDAY JULY 25, 2013. ATTENDANCE The Congress and the Prayer Session received a wide delegation from the leadership of NANS, representativesfrom the 44 tertiary institutions in the South-west and religious representativesfrom both the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) and their Christian Campus counterpart. Sequel to the extensive, intensive and robust deliberation with adequate insight on issues affecting theinterest and welfare of the generality of Nigerian Student, the congress and prayer session resolves as follow: STATE OF THE CAMPUSES 1. The Congress and Prayer Session was dedicated to NANS fallen heroes and tocommune with the metaphysical being on the state of the Association, paralyzed state of the education sectorand apparently the epileptic state of the nation. 2. The congress frowns at the harassment and humiliation faced by the students of Osun State College of Education, Ila-Orangun, Osun State and demands immediate release of innocent Nigerian Students in custody. 3. The congress decries the unhealthy interference in Union activities by management of institutions with sound warning to the management of OAU and Osun State College of Education, Ila-Orangun. And also total resolution ofEmmmanuel Alayande College of Education (EACOED) Crisis and immediate re-opening of the school theschool because any other delay is an exra year for the students. STATE OF EDUCATION IN THE NATION 1. The congress declares a state of emergencyin the education sector and calls on all stakeholders to respond with utmost alacrity 2. The congress sees the ignoble and embarrassing appointment of Professor Wale Omole as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman governing council of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso as an insult on the memories of the 5 bereaved comrades and an aberration in a sane society, thus passes a VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE ON HIM 3. The congress agreed that the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities should amicably find a lasting solution to the ongoing industrial action. 4. The congress says NO to under- funding of the education sector and declares that if ASUU calls off the strike without achieving this, Nigerian students will continue the war to ensure timely and progressive increase in the budgetary allocation to the education sector to attain the 26% minimum UNESCO recommendation for developing countries. 5. The congress demands that the Federal Government and education Unions (ASUU, ASUP, COEASU, SSANU, NUT et al) to give free and qualitative education respectively to Nigerian Students. 6. The congress frowns at incessant industrial action by Staff Unions and says no to humiliation, intimidation and threats from Staff Unions to Nigerian Students in our citadels of learning. 7. The congress reiterated and as a matter of urgency mandated the Ministry of Education to direct TET- Fund and NBTE to continue with the funding of our Monotechnics. 8. The congress is angry with the weeping state of infrastructuresand laboratories in our tertiary institutions and thus demands immediate intervention from the Federal Government. 9. The congress agreed that the Federal Government should honour their agreement with ASUU, if any exists AOB 1. The congress expresses her dissatisfactionat the political unrest andhigh level of insecurity in the nation 2. The congress demands the immediate release of all Student leaders in custodyand immediate resuscitation of Students’ Union in all tertiary institutions in the country 3. The congress commends the leadership of the Olabisi Onabanjo University for theirunflinching support in achieving a Successful Congress and Prayer Session and also congratulates the newly confirmed Vice-Chancellorof the institution.
