BEING A CREDIBLE ADVOCATE, YOUR VOICE, YOUR LIFE: As a caregiver, it is important to be an advocate for your loved one and yourself. You have a voice and you know the importance of your role. Empowerment is in your grasp. Reach out and live it! 1: Know the Facts: Caregivers provide $196 billion worth of unpaid services. The number of Caregivers in the US is 65 million and growing every day. Family Caregivers represent 80% of HomeCare Services. You are a crucial part of the healthcare system - it would not run without you! 2: Know Your Role: Becoming a Family Caregiver is an informal process. The context of care will vary for every Caregiver, whether you are caring for a parent, child, spouse, sibling or friend; the responsibilities for each relationship and condition will be vastly different. 3: Know Yourself: Be aware of your health. Notice your feelings. Both you and your loved one may be dealing with heavy and complex issues. Honesty about changing feelings helps identify depression, confusion or loneliness in their early manifestations. Ask for help when you need it! 4: Show What You Know: As a advocate, presentation is the key. Be friendly and appreciative. Recognize the contributions made by the medical team caring for your loved one. Watch for mistakes in your care for your loved one and mistakes made by the healthcare professionals.
