BEING A DOER NOT JUST A HEARER..... This morning I am drawn to the word of James who in the Bible describes himself as a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. Historians believe the author of this book in the bible was also Jesus brother. I love the book of James for its very clear no-nonsense guidance on what it means to live a christian life. Writing to the tribes of Israel, James challenges all believers to do more, to be more and to make choices that put God at the very centre of our living each day. In Chapter One verse 27 he says : But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does (NASB). As I start this week, this verse speaks a number of things to my heart and sets out a number of choices that I gladly commit myself to making by His grace and power in me.. 1. It is not enough to say I am a doer of Gods word. I choose to prove it by my actions and deeds. In Matthew 7:16 Jesus says - You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.… My words, my actions my deeds are the fruit I bear...they will be good ... 2. I need to do more than hear or read what others say about the gospel...I need to look intently at the perfect (complete) law knowing that I find my freedom (liberty) in this. This means immersing myself humbly in the word of God, in Jesus who is the Word of God. I must immerse with purpose, with focus, with concentration. (see Joshua 1:8) Meditate upon it night and day...... I choose not only to live the word but to live (abide) IN the word. (John15:7) for in doing so He abides in me! 3. in prayer, in silence, I choose to listen to the Holy Spirit so I can obey Him. Once I have read, looked, listened , I choose to ACT EFFECTIVELY in obedience to His will and word. Jesus humbled Himself before God and was obedient unto death for my sake (Philippians 2:8). All he asks me to do is to love God with everything I am and love my neighbour..... So this week, I will be obedient, I will read, look, listen and act...I will make choices that help me to bear good fruit that those who see, hear and interact with me will see my Father in me and glorify His name. I will repent when I make mistakes, I will work hard to put Him first and I will love as he loves me...I know I cannot do this all by myself so I will humbly ask the Holy Spirit , my comforter, friend, guide and teacher to teach me, to lead me, to show me.... Why do I do this? ...Because I love Him and I want Him in me, with me, always....it is the only way for me! How will you be a doer this week? Be blessed today brethren, may you immerse yourself in His love for you and in doing so find the perfect peace that comes from being in the presence of the throne of Grace. In Jesus name.
