BEING THE COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE EXPANDED NEC MEETING OF SPORTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (SWAN), HELD AT BOVINA HOTEL, ILORIN KWARA STATE ON SATURDAY AUGUST 17, 2013 The meeting lauds the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Coach Stephen Keshi-led technical crew, for the team’s victory at the 2013 edition of the African Cup of Nations and the Mandela Challenge last week in South Africa. It however, calls for adequate preparation for the World Cup qualifier against the Flames of Malawi on September, 7, 2013. The house also commends Blessing Okagbare for her heroic performance in the on-going IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia, and charges the nation’s sports Ministry/ National Sports Commission to evolve a viable youth development programme towards discovering more hidden talents for future international meets. The National Executive Council meeting of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria SWAN enjoins Sports Federations to always ensure that the association is adequately informed about their programmes within and outside the country to ensure effective publicity. It decries the promotion of foreign football leagues among others at the expense of local leagues, but enjoins the League Management Committee to see to the effective organization and management of the Nigeria football League, while collaborating with SWAN for their projection. SWAN equally condemns the way its members are being disallowed from covering league matches in some stadia, saying that sports writers should be seen as partners-in-progress. To ensure effective co-ordination of its programmes and activities at the state and national levels, it directs each State Executive Council of SWAN to ensure that their Zonal Officers are carried along while all communication should be channeled to the National Secretariat through the Zonal Officers. The meeting also tasks Zonal Vice-Presidents to liaise with state Chairmen in their respective zones, to set machinery in motion towards organizing a capacity building workshop on specialized sports reporting, before the end of the first quarter of 2014. SWAN commends the government of Kwara State under the leadership of Alhaji Abudulfatah Ahmed for facilitating the hosting of the Expanded NEC meeting of the association and for its continued support for Kwara State SWAN activities and programmes, describing the chapter as a model for others. Finally, it congratulates the new Pillar of Sports in Nigeria, Chief Donatus Agu Ejidike on his appointment, and tasks him to brace up for the challenges ahead.
