BELARUS 5715 CITIZENS WENT ABROAD TO WORK OUT OF WHICH 4916 TO RUSSIA LAST YEAR MINSK, 4 February (BelTA) – An estimated 5,715 people left Belarus last year to work abroad, of them 4,916 went to the Russian Federation. The data is based on contracts presented to the departments on citizenship and migration of the interior bodies, Deputy Head of the Department on Citizenship and Migration of the Interior Ministry Alexander Tatura told an online conference hosted by BelTA on 4 February. For comparison: in 2012 a total 6,534 people left Belarus to work abroad on a contract. According to the Interior Ministry, the majority of migrants, 3,569 people, are blue-collar workers, 677 are skilled workers and specialists, 301 – agricultural workers, 15 for executive positions, 1,153 – trade and service workers. Today the activity related to overseas employment is conducted by 80 legal entities and two sole proprietors in Belarus. According to Alexander Tatura, an agreement on temporary employment and social protection of people working abroad is concluded to protect Belarus’ interests on the international market of labor and efficiently protect its citizens working abroad as well as counteract illegal employment. Bilateral intergovernmental agreements in the area have been so far signed with Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, Poland, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Serbia and Vietnam. Two agreements were signed in Saint Petersburg on 19 November 2010 to contribute to the development of the legal framework of the Single Economic Space. One of the agreements pertains to cooperation against illegal labor migration from third countries. The other emphasizes the legal status of working migrants and their family members. These agreements, which regulate employment rules for citizens of Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan, have already taken effect. Apart from that the interstate procedures to introduce the intergovernmental agreement on temporary working activity for citizens of Belarus and Tajikistan on the territory of these two countries are nearing completion.
