BELARUS AROUND 300,000 CITIZENS ARE WORKING EITHER TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT BASIS IN RUSSIA MINSK, 21 November (BelTA) – About 300,000 Belarusians work abroad, BelTA learned from Alexei Begun, Head of the Citizenship and Migration Department of the Belarusian Interior Ministry, on 21 November. The official said that Russian authorities estimate that about 300,000 Belarusian citizens work in temporary jobs in Russia alone. The relevant authorities in Belarus estimate that 100,000 citizens have been paid within one year working as part of short-term or long-term visits. Due to the hidden nature of such jobs neither Russian authorities nor Belarusian ones try to keep precise statistics records, this is why the figures differ. Alexei Begun said that the 300,000 figure looks more probable, however, it can change due to rough estimates, calculations of specialists, and conclusions of some researchers. In turn, Head of the Employment Policy Office of the Belarusian Labor and Social Protection Ministry Oleg Tokun explained that in line with the effective legislation Belarusian citizens, who work as legal labor migrants, are not recorded as unemployed because any kind of labor that generates legal revenues is considered a job. The official added that there are 65,000 open jobs in Belarus, with 80% being blue-collar jobs. The most sought-after specialists are construction workers, namely installation fitters, roofers, tile setters, and steel fixers. There is a shortage of medics, paramedics, and engineers.
