BELOW IS A LETTER RECENTLY WRITTEN BY A REPUBLICAN ACTIVIST TO OTHER REPUBLICANS. Other republicans, around the state, are bringing foreword similar support for HF276. Democrats, from around the state, will also be bringing similar support to their caucuses. This is very unusual, very grassroots, very bi-partisan. It’s good to see this bi-partisan support from the local, county, state, and national level. You can help make it happen on February 4th, at your caucus. (The SF17 has already passed the MN Senate so does not really need caucus support.) Fellow Republicans, Attached is an article I shamelessly copied from a recent Star and Tribune investigation into political contribution spending in MN. If there is to be a future for the GOP in MN, it is going to have to be coupled with campaign finance reforms. The Democratic left is outspending the GOP by a wide margin. Leading the way are the public unions on the left, and on the right are private donors with a strong social agenda, some of which has proved detrimental to the party. We need to get the money out of politics on all sides and restore the notion of one man one vote. A great way to do this may include support for SF17 and HF276 in St. Paul. Very briefly, these two bills urge our federal contingent in Washington to support legislation, or an amendment, that counter-acts the devastating effects caused by the Supreme Courts decision in Citizen United, which granted corporations, unions, and charity personhood in the eyes of the law. The proliferation of PAC money, charity money spent for political campaigns, and other matters have come to dominate the political scene. Nothing will change unless good people stand up and fight to restore legitimacy to our political dialog and debate. Ill be presenting a resolution at my local caucus meeting in hopes of generating support for a resolution at the Meeker County Convention on February 4. This is a fight that can only be fought at the grass roots level. The media is the recipient of most of the money in politics and will not be leading any charge intended to change that equation. I encourage you to consider our options and support the fight to change the dialog in America. The greatest irony in all this is that the Progressive Left already supports this fight and they even recognize how destructive the Supreme Court decision is to the future of America. We can join with them if we can muster the political courage to do so. Ill be preparing other documents for the caucus and will be sharing it with you in hopes that each of you will support similar efforts in your caucus, and plan to bring the fight to the convention in February. If you have other ideas for reforms that provide meaningful improvements to campaign finance reform, plan to bring those ideas too. Ford Peterson Dassel Township
