BELZE UNITY ALLIANCE PRESS RELEASE Dated 10th December 2014 – for immediate release The Belize Unity Alliance confirms that BUA has not endorsed any candidates or prospective candidates in the forthcoming Cayo North Bye Election. Comments Charles Leslie Jr, Chair of BUA, “We are disappointed that no suitable candidate emerged whom we felt able to endorse. As an organisation dedicated to the growth of the alternative party movement in Belize, we by definition never endorse PUP or UDP candidates.” He goes on to say, “It is a pity that the constituents of Cayo North have no choice but to vote for one of the two main party candidates, or to spoil their vote in protest. We believe that it is both a right and a duty to vote, so, we simply advise people, as ever, to follow their conscience.” “We invite prospective candidates representing alternative parties or standing as independents in forthcoming Municipal and General elections to contact BUA to find out more about how they can be endorsed.” The BUA is currently endorsing Wil Maheia and the PNP for Mayor and council in Punta Gorda, and is considering endorsement requests from other areas. All parties and individuals who are BUA members agree to abide by basic standards and principles. This will allow each region, municipality and constituency to be represented under the umbrella of BUA. Under the BUA, alternative parties/candidate do not have to compromise their integrity and ideologies. Parties and individuals can offer up to the public their own policies. However voters will know that all BUA candidates, whichever party they represent, have agreed to certain basic principles – equality under the rule of law, Belize for Belizeans, honesty in public life, a national economic plan for Belize, and constitutional reform.
