BENEATH THE MELTING ICE, THE ARCTIC METHANE MONSTER CONTINUES ITS OMINOUS RUMBLING Scientists have witnessed kilometer-wide plumes of methane bubbling out of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf, and NASAs CARVE study has detected 150-kilometer atmospheric plumes. To say that this is bad news is an understatement; many of Earths prehistoric extinction events bear the fingerprints of a massive methane release. Methane is 20 to a 100 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. The arctic methane monster, the headlined article calls it. A NASA article asks Is a Sleeping Climate Giant Stirring in the Arctic?. Its as if we feel an unconscious need to personify this malevolent force.
