BEST OF THE BEST – Day 23: Founded in 2007 by Joe Wos, The Pittsburgh ToonSeum is one of only three museums in the country dedicated to the collective cartoon arts: animation, comic-strips, and comic-books. This distinction was a big reason The National Cartoonists Society brought their annual convention to the Steel City back in May. Yes, the ToonSeum is small, but it packs a Hulk-sized punch! It has hosted exhibits featuring everything from the art of THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy to the animation classic AKIRA to the work of famed comic-book creator Will Eisner (THE SPIRIT) to Dale Messick’s classic comic-strip BRENDA STARR, and even contemporary local artists like Pittsburgh’s own Jim Rugg (SUPERMAG). As a resource center, it houses a library filled with books on the cartoon arts and pop culture, perfect for students with research projects. They also throw one mean party. Come to their annual fundraiser KA-BLAM this year and you’ll see what I mean! As Executive Director and Art Instructor, Joe (who’s been teaching cartooning for over 25 years, and was the subject of news articles last year for attempting to create the world’s largest hand-drawn maze!) has along with Board President Rob Rogers (featured earlier this month in B.o.t.B.), Vice-President Harold Behar, Marketing & Programming Director Mandi Bridgeman, and a whip-smart staff of others (including Erin Marton Gaus, Chris Bushmen, Nicole Chynoweth and many, many more) lifted the ToonSeum from its humble origins in the Children’s Museum to a place of national relevance which calls our Cultural District its home. The best part is they plan to keep on growing. So stop by, bring friends from out of town, and visit their Facebook page to “Like” it today and put them over 4000 thumbs-up! *This endorsement has been brought to you by their Comic-Book Artist in Residence!
