BEWARE! I need to rant a minute. Lets talk about public school. At what point can we, as a society, finally admit that there is a problem in our educational system? My main gripe is the new common core standards. Im not blaming teachers, the principal, or other people within the schools. Im blaming the burocracy that implemented this nightmare that we are living through now. Ive got several friends who no longer have their children in the public schools anymore, and have found alternatives to give their kids a fighting chance at succeeding in life. Whether its private schools, home school, etc. My son Logan is spending the entire summer doing reading and math assignments, to avoid brain drain, and it may not even help. Jamie Campbell Davis is a great mother and Kahlan Davis is a great sister, who both work with Logan almost daily on his homework. The reason I say it may not help is because the schools have become a place to experiment on the captive guinea pigs who cant escape. The assignments are obsurd. Most of the time, we spend more time trying to figure out what the question is trying to ask then actually helping our son. Its no exaggeration when I say that we spend 2-3 hours on homework every night, during the school year. He was in third grade! Lets also not forget that I had to pay for additional tutoring to help him get through the End of Grade testing. It didnt used to be like this. What happened to basic education? How did it become so complicated? I know this is the summer, and schools not even in session, but I hate seeing my son continue to struggle, only to get beaten down again and again. Im not asking him to become a doctor at the end of his educational journey, but I dont want him falling in the cracks of a system thats failing him.
