BFAR: El Nino wont affect fish yield A LONG dry spell, or “El Niño,” won’t have that much impact on the fish production in the region, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Northern Mindanao (BFAR-10) said Thursday. Asuncion Maputol, BFAR-10 assistant regional director, said since the El Niño phenomenon has been experienced in the country decades ago, and it had no adverse effect on the fishery sector. The months-long drought is expected to hit the Philippines by October this year and will continue to persist until the early months of 2015, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) predicted. Maputol said that during the dry season, fish growers can still adapt even in the absence of rainwater. She cited the case of the fish growers in Alubijid town, Misamis Oriental, who during the intense summer heat would divert its livelihood from growing fish to producing salt when their fishponds dry up. She said BFAR-10 is more concerned with La Niña, the opposite of El Niño, when excessive rains would inundate fishponds causing losses in fish production. sunstar.ph/cagayan-de-oro/local-news/2014/09/12/bfar-el-nino-wont-affect-fish-yield-365100
