BH EVERYDAY - the Negro Baseball League/Congressional Black Caucus edition Love, Laugh, Donate Life - N. A. M. National Baseball League is organized by Andrew Rube Foster and a group of black baseball club owners in 1920. The affluent Black town of Rosewood, FL, was destroyed when Blacks were attacked by mobs of whites beginning on this date in 1923. A nearly three-year build up of violence led to the massacre in which at least eight (some witnesses estimated 40 to 80) persons were killed. Grace Bumbry, famed mezzo-soprano opera singer, was born on this date in 1937. William L. Dawson, Congressman from Illinois and the first Black Vice Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, began his 25-year congressional career on this date in 1943. Dawson was elected November 3, 1942. Dr. Melvin H. Evans was inaugurated the first elected Governor of the Virgin Islands on this date in 1971. William Henry Hastie was their first Black Governor, however, the people could not elect their own Governor until 1968. The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) was organized on this date in 1971 to provide awareness and alliances across racial, political, and social lines. Barack Obama was sworn in to the US Senate as the third African American senator since Reconstruction and the fifth in history on this date in 2005. He served on the Foreign Relations and Veterans Affairs Committees.
