Three Baptists groups: the foreign Mission Convention of the United States, the American National Baptist Convention, and the Baptist National Education Convention, merged and established the National Convention at an Atlanta, GA, meeting on this date in 1895. George Alexander McGuire, was consecrated the first Bishop of the African Orthodox Church, on this date in 1921. Ossie Davis opened Purlie Victorious (a farce) on Broadway on this date in 1961.
