BIG BARREL KIA TOA SENIOR A MATCH REPORT - SATURDAY 7 JUNE 2014 ROUND 14 AGAINST LINTON Back at Bill Brown Park for this encounter and things got off to a poor start with 2nd five Nathan Tudreu having to withdraw, due to a hamstrung strain in the warm up session. This necessitated a last minute reshuffle of the backline : • Jason Emery moving from centre to 2nd five • Newton Tudreu from the right wing to centre • Isikeli Bakarau from the reserves to the right wing • Ryan Keleher coming onto the reserve bench, following his long spell off with a leg injury. Ball control was an issue for Kias during the first ten minutes of the match with a lot of “pill” spilled, from which Linton were able to capitalise. In fact they opened the scoring with a try and this prompted our boys to get better organised and focussed on what need to be done. The forwards were then able to maintain a good supply of possession right though to full time, allowing the backs to opened up. It was great to see some consistent pressure being applied at scrum time, an aspect of the game where we are making a much needed improvement. Lock Fraser Stone was the only forward on the scoreboard, with his try coming just before half time. The back scorers were : • 3 tries to left winger Maleli Sua • 3 ties to full back Jordan Bunce • 2 tries to centre Newton Tudreu • 1 try to 2nd five Jason Emery • A classic intercept try to 1st five Jade Te Rure, who also kicked 7 conversions and 1 penalty goal. Final result 72 : 10, means Kias have gained 5 competition points from all three of the “early turn around” games over the last eight days. This is a marvellous effort and indicates the Team is hitting form at the right end of the season. We now farewell Jason Emery back to the Highlanders, but look forward to Tevita Taufu’i and Nathan Tudreu’s return to the mid-field. • Steve’s Tyre Service Player of the Day:- 3 – Left wing, Maleli Sua 2 – Openside flanker, Cam Pearson ,1 – 2nd five, Jason Emery Kia Toa Senior B had a bye. Presidents vs Linton. Linton tend to have hot and cold results depending on whether it is a home or away game. They don’t always have player numbers on away games, only 7 players turned up against Bunnythorpe, but that was not to be the case on Saturday. Both teams had plenty of reserves with 23 turning up for us, possibly 1 or 2 more than Linton. And that is where our advantage ended. Linton came to play. Our forwards were struggling to maintain an equal footing with the Linton forwards but their backline was strong and fast, breaking through our first up tackles on numerous occasions and then having support on either side. Tavo scored an individual try in the first half when he caught Linton napping at a penalty. Cruden made a similar play later that night. The half time score was 31 to 5. We were a bit shell shocked as this was the first time in the season where we were looking down the barrel of a good old fashion hiding. We showed a bit of guts in the second half with Stu, Rewi and Mika scoring a try each. However Linton showed no mercy and ran in five more tries, final score 60 to 22 to Linton. A reality check for the team. While we have a bye next week, we will meet for a friendly game amongst ourselves and then off to a joey session before the second AB test. Women’s rugby team Our Womens team has not played the last two weeks due to defaults, but some of our players are excelling in other teams. Selica Winiata and Ruth McKay have played for the Black Ferns the last two weeks. On Saturday, against Samoa, Selica scored 5 tries in the 90 to 12 win. She became the highest try scorer in first class matches for NZ Women. Ruth also played very well and we hope the injury to her eye doesn’t cause her too much inconvenience. We also congratulate Ebony Lowe and Chrystal Mays who have made the Kiwi Ferns (NZ Rugby League) team. They controlled the game and ball and played smart netball. The A2 team fought hard and showed they have determination and wouldn’t give up without a fight. The score really did not reflect the score. Kia Toa Cougars vs HSOG Ucol Red Watching this game from the court next door. It looked like the cougars were having a ball and enjoying the game and reason why they were playing this year. Excellent score and win for the day.
