BIG EYES, BEETLEJUICE, AND BATMAN: TIM BURTON ON FINDING HIS VOICE The filmmaker opens up about his new movie, that potential Beetlejuice sequel and critics: I dont listen to them. (INTERVIEW POSTED BELOW) Q: Then how do you evaluate yourself as a filmmaker after the work is done? A: I dont. And thats the other thing too: When you start your career, if youre lucky enough to get a few successes, then they start to look at you as a commodity: Oh, thats what he does. Then you dont do something like that and they say Well its not like a Tim Burton movie. Its like [throws hands up in the air], OK, I lose either way. Q: That could be one of the reasons that Michael Keaton sort of retreated from bigger films — not wanting to be boxed in. A:You get pigeonholed. Nobody likes it. I didnt like it when I was a child, and I still dont like it. In a weird way, its a form of control and putting a person down in a funny way. Do you know what I mean?
