BIG NEWS - We are excited to announce that we have started a £200,000 expansion / refurbishment / modernisation of Rockcity Climbing Centre Hull. These are the biggest changes to Rockcity since it was initially built 20 years ago. We asked our Chief Route Setter, Steve McClure, to give us the benefit of his years of professional climbing, route setting and using many other climbing walls. The main changes are as follows:- A heap of new Bouldering Walls, giving us enough to rival any of the UK dedicated bouldering centres. This includes our new steep, steep bouldering / Solo Wall, The Abyss. The Abyss will be the UKs longest, steepest climbing wall, overhanging 40-50 degrees and having 30 metre long routes/problems on it. All without ropes and above a rising floor of bouldering matting. In addition, a new childrens bouldering wall, scaled down from our exisitng full sized ones, ranging between 2-4 metre high with smaller problems with an element of play combined with the fun and excitement of rock climbing. Suitable for under 5s up to 12 years of age. Hull City Walls will be themed on the historic Hull city walls and citadel of the 17th century. A new Top Roped Wall will replace the remaining Trad Wall section at the end of the middle of the climbing centre. The Alcove Lead Wall will be made steeper, providing a sustained 30 degree overhanging extension. This will fill the gap between the existing 3 degrees lead wall and the new The Abyss. This work is being funded mainly by revenue but also with continued support from the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce Acorn Fund and another, soon to be announced funder.
