BIG WINS FOR JVA CLIENTS! WHALEY WINS DAYTON MAYOR IN A “NAN-SLIDE” In Dayton, Ohio, City Commissioner Nan Whaley defeated a Republican Party-backed “Democrat in Name Only”, 56-44, to become the city’s newest Mayor. This was after first winning 51% in a three-way primary in May, knocking the incumbent Republican mayor out of the fight. JVA-DESIGNED INDEPENDENT EXPENDITURE DEFEATS MIKE “SB 5” BELL In Toledo, Councilman D. Michael Collins handily won 57-43 over incumbent Mayor Mike Bell. Bell turned his back on his Fire Fighter brethren to endorse Ohio’s anti-Labor Senate Bill 5 in 2011 and subsequently appeared in a TV spot for the campaign, making him a top priority for defeat among labor organizations. The Toledo Blade called our campaign ads, “sleazy,” but we know the real sleaze was the way Mayor Bell approached the hardworking public employees of the City. CRUSHING DEFEAT FOR TEA PARTY IN CINCINNATI PENSION REFORM ISSUE With six-figure funding from anonymous donors, the Tea Party backed Issue 4, which sought to dismantle public employee pensions in Cincinnati and adopt a “Detroit-style” privatization approach. As Esquire noted, “The vote in Cincinnati was a carefully selected test case for ripping off workers for the benefit of large financial services institutions.” JVA Campaigns coordinated the entire campaign, including a voter identification and vote-by-mail program that culminated in winning absentees 4-to-1, and an overall victory of 78-22.
