BIO AVRIL LAVIGNE Childhood and Adolescence Avril Ramona Lavigne was born on September 27, 1984 , in Belleville , Canadian city which has a population of five thousand . His father , Jean - Claude Lavigne , named her Avril after the French word for the month of April. In two years old, she began singing church songs with her mother , Judith - Rosanne Judy . Judy recognized the talent of his daughter with that time of life , after hearing her sing Jesus Loves Me in church . Lavigne has an older brother, Matthew , and a younger sister , Michelle , both of whom teased her when she sang . A few months later the family moved to Napanee , also in Canada . She also began writing her own songs . His first song was called Can not Stop Thinking About You , about a teenage crush , which she described as beautiful and extravagant .
