BIOCHEMISTRY…understanding the words There is nothing in biochemistry that a person cannot learn if the vocabulary is clearly understood…In My Opinion [IMO]. IN MY OPINION [IMO] In my opinion 90% of the trouble with biochemistry is due to the fact that so many biochemists use so many different terms to mean exactly the same thing. That is why I frequently type out the entire name of the gene, enzyme or molecule. I also try to put in parentheses abbreviations frequently used to mean the same thing. PICTURE: THE MOLECULE…MethylTetraHydroFolate [MTHF] Look for the methyl group [-CH3] on the Nitrogen [N] THAT Methyl Group… is the reason why this molecule is so important. GENES The GENE: [often printed in italics …slanted toward the right] MethylTetraHdyroFolate Reductase [MTHFR] GENE ENZYMES The ENZYME: [usually printed straight up and down…not in italics] MethylTetraHdyroFolate Reductase [MTHFR] ENZYME MOLECULES MethylTetraHydroFolate…is also frequently written as: L-Methyl Folate Levomefolic acid 5-MTHF 5-CH3-THF 5-Methyl-THF N5-MethylTHF Methyl-THF And, when it comes to FOLATES...there are so many KINDS OF FOLATES and your doctor cannot tell you all folate is Folic ACID. That is so WRONG. One cannot refer to all folates as if they are Folic ACID… they are NOT equivalent molecules. Even professionals dont know the differences among the various folates. Then inadvertently their patients end up misleading one another by making statements that are incorrect and then everyone gets so confused. WHAT WE MUST DO: Whenever anyone tells you something...before swallowing any supplement: 1. CONFIRM any statement by finding two supportive completely unrelated sources. 2. UNDERSTAND: Make sure you know why you need to take something...not just that you should swallow it because I tell you so. If you are paying good money to a counselor to guide you through your healing process, do not take their word for anything. Make your counselor tell you precisely why they recommend you do one thing or another. Only parents can say... Because I Say So. :-) And, do not let them tell you that they will not explain the biochemistry because: “they know better” “they understand it because of some special intuitive ability” “that you are too stupid to understand the biochemistry”. 3. Insist on a PRINTED EXPLANATION from any professional to whom you are paying a fee $.
