BIRTHDAY BASH Police book MLA for assaulting civic staffer who took off banner Pradeep Gupta TNN Mumbai: Independent legislator Ganpat Gaikwad and his associate were booked for kidnapping and assaulting a civic official for removing his birthday banner in Kalyan (W) on Friday morning.The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation staff later organized a pen-down stir against the incident. Eknath Shetye,a KDMC official,claimed that the National Congress Party-supported Kalyan (E) constituency MLA took him into his car,assaulted him along the way,and held him hostage at his office for two hours.Shetye was later admitted to Sanjeevani Hospital. He said Gaikwad threatened him,forced him to sit in a cabin in his office and told him not to phone anybody. On learning about the abduction,senior ward officer Ganesh Borade called up Gaikwad and told him to release Shetye as the staff were following a high court order.Gaikwad released him only two hours later,when news about the incident spread. When Shetye lodged an FIR against Gaikwad,the Mahatma Phule police booked Gaikwad under sections 363 (kidnapping),353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant ),332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty),504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation ) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 1 and 3 of the Prevention of Defacement of Property Act,Maharashtra,1995. The police said they would take further action only after detailed investigations. Gaikwad said KDMC officials targeted only his banners at Bail Bazaar Chowk.He said KDMC encroachment department officials,including commissioner Ramnath Sonawane,should also be booked for protecting illegal banners.Sonawane said action had been taken against all party leaders.
