BIRTHDAY SURPRISE. I marked my birthday last week. I woke up early that day and found a pleasant surprise in the e-mail, a field visit note for my comment or reaction that contained a very humbling remark about my Balangiga scholarship. It said: Having spent remarkable moments with Rolly Borrinaga, I easily recognize him as probably the premier authority on that moment in history, a scholar of integrity without bias, and a man of humility who comfortably will tell you he is still learning. I trust his judgment and the authenticity of his scholarship. The commentator is a retired Rear-Admiral in the U.S. Navy and is deeply involved in the latest campaign for the return of the Bells of Balangiga from the U.S. to its church in Eastern Samar, Philippines. He has read much of my Balangiga writings and I toured him around the 1901 battlefield in Balangiga and related places in Basey, Samar two months ago. He is also closely associated with the corporate group that has rehabilitated the municipal building and market building of Balangiga that were wrecked by Supertyphoon Yolanda and is completing the construction of three new school buildings inside the Balangiga Central School.
