BIRTHDAY WISHES: Zach Lind was born today in Mesa, Arizona, in 1976. Zach Lind is the drummer for the alternative rock band Jimmy Eat World. Singer/guitarist Jim Adkins and Zach, who had been friends since kindergarten, joined with guitarist Tom Linton and bass player Mitch Porter formed the band in 1993 to try their hand at music. Theyve been going strong ever since. Last year, Jimmy Eat World released their eighth studio album called Damage. In Zachs own words: My brother played the baritone in elementary school so I thought it would be cool to play an instrument. I originally started with saxophone and enjoyed it but was never very good. During a general music class in 5th grade I was playing on a pair of rototoms and really loved it. The teacher thought I should try the drums so I begged my parents to let me switch and thank God they did. I started with a little school kit with a practice pad and a set of bells. After that my parents got me a snare drum. My mom and dad bought me a black CB-700 kit from Milano’s in Mesa, Arizona. It was 5 piece. I set it up in my bedroom and played it to death. I was the only percussionist in the school band so I convinced the music teacher to let me bring my bass drum and snare so I could cover both the bass drum and snare parts. I was way into it. I took lessons right away. I started with a guy named Nate Stiffler. At the time he was in high school and he was/is an incredible drummer. I looked up to him big time. He was a great teacher and I was super bummed when he went away to college. I never found a teacher I like as much as Nate. When I was first starting, I loved bands like Bon Jovi, Def Leppard. Then I sort of graduated to bands like U2, R.E.M., and The Cure. I’m still a huge fan of all those bands but Larry Mullen, Jr., and Bill Berry were and still are massive influences on me. I’ve never been about one drummer or another. I really loved Patrick Wilson from Weezer for a long time. Steve Ferrone, who plays in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, has become a favorite. And of course, The Heartbreakers’ original drummer, Stan Lynch.
