BJP poll campaign in Siliguri Siliguri, Jan. 25: The BJP Darjeeling district committee will start campaigns for the Siliguri Municipal Corporation and Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad elections from this week before Trinamul kick starts its programmes to garner votes. The SMP and SMC poll dates are yet to announced but they are likely to be held around the middle of this year. Rathindra Bose, district president of the BJP, said they would hold workers meetings on January 28 and 29 to discuss strategies for the SMP elections and a similar meeting would be held with workers of the SMC area on January 31. He said BJP state president Rahul Sinha would visit at least two SMC wards where door-to-door campaigns would begin from January 31. BJP workers of Matigara, Naxalbari, Phansidewa and Kharibari - four SMP blocks - would meet on Wednesday and Thursday. We will hold two meetings at Ranidanga for workers of Matigara and Naxalbari and a meeting at Phansidewa (for workers of Phansidewa and Kharibari) on January 28 and 29 respectively where we will discuss strategy for the SMP election. MP S.S. Ahluwalia will attend both the meetings, Bose said. The blocks are in Darjeeling district. We are going to organise a meet at the Siliguri Indoor Stadium on January 31 with our workers of all 47 wards of the SMC, Bose said at a news conference here today. The partys state president (Rahul Sinha) will be present. The conference would be organised keeping an eye on the civic polls and we will discuss our strategy and guidelines. Before the meet, the state president would visit at least two SMC wards and interact with the residents to find out what measures should be taken up for development of those areas, Bose added. He said a membership drive across the district has started. We have started enrolling new members since November 2014 and we expect to get 50, 000 members by March this year. We will contest the (SMC, SMP) polls with an alliance with our NDA partners like the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad and the Kamtapur Peoples Party, Bose said. He added: As the Trinamul-led government has failed to provide better drinking water service, proper drainage, road and conservancy in the civic area, we are going to highlight the issues. The present state government, like the Left Front and Congress, has failed miserably to provide the basic minimum service and that will be our main focus. We will also highlight how the government is ignoring the civic services and trying to divert peoples attention by organising festivals one after the other. Trinamul leaders said they were not too worried about the rivals political activities. Krishna Pal, general secretary of Trinamul Darjeeling district committee, said: We dont want to comment on any other political organisations political programme. All we can say is that Trinamul workers are well aware of their responsibilities and they work for people throughout the year. A Trinamul source said they were waiting for the Siliguri Carnival and Uttarbanga Utsav to end. The carnival ended last month and the weeklong Utsav will end tomorrow. Once these are over, the district leadership will hold a core committee meet and chalk out the poll strategies, said the source. TT
