BK: December 9, 2014 at 10:10 am (Quote) @ Patrick, well said. After reading PM LHL speech. I was wondering what was he going on about First World Nation? Except for the labor induced GDP, what other criteria made us First World? Most would assume that means we have a strong economy. on account of GDP it seems so. Yet, DPM Tharman, the finance man in PAP had this to say: 1. “We’re past the upper-middle income stage, we’re no longer a developing country but we’re not yet an advanced country. And when we’re trying to move from upper-middle to something closer to advanced, the climb is steeper.” 2. “It’s not an easy catch-up, it requires something that’s more within … it’s about capabilities, it’s about attitudes, it’s about respect for workers and it’s about creativity.” It is obvious that we cannot be described as First World economically. And part of this is shown by our productivity which is 10 to 30% behind advanced economies. So, I was thinking, if a man is rich, yet his capability or his job or business does not seem to be in correlation to the amount of money he has, that is a red flag isnt it? If it is a person, surely he will be investigated for money laundering. But what of Singapore? But it maybe easier to picture Singapore as a person rather than to go through the labyrinth of economic theories (which in any case people like @ Chris K had already assiduously presented). You see, everyone has a heart of fixed capacity. If you get too big, the heart has to work extra hard to pump the life blood to get oxygen to every cell in you. But for sports people, because they exercise frequently, the structure of the heart changes. In a strenuous exercise a normal heart pumps between 14 to 20 liters more per minute, but an elite athlete pumps 40 liters/minute. In this analogy, us are akin to being an obese. Not First World like an elite athlete. We are eating huge portions (massive reserves) while depriving benefits to vital organs like the heart (social benefits). Our intellectual capital (brain) is awash with neurotoxins, food additives like MSM additives, unnatural and can alter brain chemistry, memory, and more. What First World Nation? We are not an elite athlete, we buy, bribe or borrow them. The pretense of being a First World Nation is like a drug junkie, constantly getting high while the body deteriorates. Singapore is fundamentally ready for a detox, so to speak.
