*BLACK HISTORY FACT* Thorton Dial, Sr. an African American painter and sculptor was born on this date in 1928. In 1987, Dial Sr. began his career with the encouragement of a white art collector. Material used in his work ranged from carpeting to bottles drawn from his immediate surroundings. Thorton Dial Sr.’s themes came from his experiences living through segregation and the civil rights movement. Some of his pieces are African Ladies Dancing, Life Goes On and Remembering the Road.
