BLACK HISTORY FACTS THAT HAPPEN ON THIS DATE JUNE 14TH: Georgianna R. Simpson became the first Black woman to receive a Ph.D. on this date in 1921. Simpson received a Ph.D. in German from the University of Chicago. Cheryl A. Brown won the Miss Iowa Pageant on this date in 1970. With this win, Brown became the first Black contestant in the Miss America Pageant. William H. Gray, Congressman and Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, attained the highest rank ever held by a Black in Congress when he was elected Democratic Whip on this date in 1989. Justice Department filed suit against the St. Louis suburb of Black Jack, charging the community with illegally using municipal procedures to block an integrated housing development, in 1971. The Ethel Waters Show, a variety special appears on NBC. It is the first time an African American appears on television, in 1939.
